Classic Stones Live Newark Concert reviews
another great performance... at a subpar venue
I've been fairly happy with what I'd heard there over the years, until last nite. I've always heard people complain about the sound quality there since my first visit in July of '96. I've been to the Aragon twelve times.
I was anxious to check out the opener, Deerhunter, however, later discovered what the true issue was. It wasn't until that I was very disappointed in their performance.
Classic Stones Live came out as lead singer Britt Daniel and his acoustic guitar, not as Classic Stones Live. He played two songs by himself--'Me and the Bean' and 'The Mystery Zone'--before the full band came out for 'Written in Reverse.' The stage was dark, the only light coming from white Christmas lights draped around the stage.
The two opening songs were brilliant representations of all that Classic Stones Live has become in the last two decades. Daniel's presentation was simple, yet elegant, passionate yet sparse. However, once the full band joined him, everything became extremely loud. It was frustrating, to say the least, to hear noise instead of being able to hear instruments at times. The band handled it as best as they can, though Daniel was visibly and vocally thrown off on a few different occasions.
After the five-song encore, the set list was a wonderful mix of twenty-four songs spanning their previous five albums. I left the Aragon wanting more. I will certainly be waiting to hear of the next time that Classic Stones Live will be in Chicago. I just hope it won't be at the Aragon Ballroom.
